Overview
UHealth, the University of Miami Health System, is South Florida’s only comprehensive network of university-based patient care facilities. It is the patient care brand of the University of Miami Leonard M. Miller School of Medicine.
In 1952, the University opened the first medical school in Florida. Since then, it has grown into a powerhouse known for practice-changing research and education, qualities that directly influence patient care delivery at UHealth..
UHealth consists of more than three dozen hospitals and outpatient facilities dedicated to the care and treatment of patients worldwide. Three hospitals are university-owned: University of Miami Hospital, a 560-bed acute care hospital formerly known as Cedars Medical Center; Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center; and Bascom Palmer Eye Institute.
Two hospitals are primary affiliates, Jackson Memorial Hospital and Holtz Children’s Hospital, and nine additional hospitals are key affiliates, led by Miami VA Medical Center. UHealth also operates more than two dozen outpatient locations conveniently situated in four counties.
UHealth has nearly 10,000 employees and 1,200 physicians serving about 400,000 patients annually. The Miller School of Medicine, powering UHealth, has 700 medical students and more than 1,500 research studies underway. Miller has more than $200 million in research grants for 2008-2009.
