Why am I being asked to quit smoking? Isn't smoking my legal right?

We are not asking you to quit smoking, only that you not smoke anywhere on this campus

Why has the campus gone smoke-free?

As a leading health care provider in our community, our mission is to create and support a high quality, healthy setting for our:

  • Patients
  • Visitors
  • Workers
  • Volunteers
  • Doctors

What is our smoke-free policy?

We are getting rid of any form of tobacco smoke on all sites owned by University of Miami or Jackson Health System. This includes cigarettes, cigars, pipe smoking and any other form of smoking.

Are there any exceptions to this policy? Where can I smoke?

There are no exceptions! You will have to leave the campus if you want/need to smoke.

Can I smoke in my car or in the parking garages/stairwells?

No, smoking is not allowed anywhere within the campus borders, including:

  • Parked cars, trucks, or other vehicles
  • Parking lots
  • Garages
  • Stairwells

Why all the focus on tobacco instead of other health risks?

Tobacco is the number one leading cause of illness and death that can be prevented. Tobacco causes harm to others nearby through breathing in of second-hand smoke.

What is second-hand smoke?

Second-hand smoke poses major health risks. Contact with smoke put pepole at risk for serious health problems, such as lung cancer, heart disease, and harmful effects to the eyes, ears, nose, and throat.

Why aren't designated smoking areas enough?

Simply keeping smokers from non-smokers does not prevent contact with secnd-hand smoke. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has found that second0hand smoke cannot be reduced to safe levels by ventilation (airing) alone.

Is there help if I choose to stop smoking?

Yes, we are so glad you asked?

  • Quitting is the most important health choice you will ever make.
  • We have many ways to help you quit smoking.
  • While quitting can be hard for many, and often takes a lot of tries; Quitting is possible!
